unreal engine can't compile c++ code
It looks like your visual studio environment isn't being detected correctly. I've attached a batch file which will dump out your visual studio environment in the same way that the engine detects it. Could you download that file, rename the extension to .bat, and run it?
It should write a file called info.txt to the same directory. Can you post that back here?

For one, you may have to close the editor before compiling the code in Visual Studio. What changes did you make to your code prior to trying to compile? There isn't a huge amount to go off from here.

If you have not made any significant modifications to the Shooter Game sample, it would be easier to download the sample for version 4.2 instead of upgrading the 4.1 version.
