UE4 Editor freezes my PC

My entire PC freezes whenever I try to launch the editor. I haven’t used UE4 previously, so not sure if that’s version-specific, but I did notice that the amount of RAM that UE4 Editor takes spikes to about 6GB(out of 8) right before the freeze.

Hi Redthirst,

Please review the Hardware & Software Specifications page and post your system specs. Also, for test purposes, please try installing and verifying a previous version of the engine.

Since 8GB of Ram is listed as the minimum requirement, it is not surprising that the Ram spikes upon opening the editor. That said, there could be other issues that may be causing your PC to freeze. Please provide the requested information and we will continue to investigate.

Thanks,

.

CPU: AMD FX-6300
GPU: R7 260
8GB RAM

I understand that it’s not enough to handle developing a full game, but I didn’t expect that I wouldn’t be able to run the editor with an empty project(especially considering that this setup can still run full games built on UE4)

I also installed 4.11, and it appears to work.

No, there are no issues with using 4.11, I just downloaded 4.15 since it’s the latest version, I don’t really need it.

Thanks for the help!

I agree that UE4.15 should load and run on your system, if not at a lower frame rate but the RAM spike leads me to believe that your system specs may be at the root of the issue. Since 4.11 appears to be working fine, you could stick with that or try adding UE12 and, if it works, remove 4.11. You can continue to do this until you reach a version that will not perform, in order to run the latest possible version of UE4 on your machine.

There is nothing wrong working in previous versions of the engine unless your project requires a feature that has not yet been implemented or if there is a specific bug in your project that has not been fixed for that version.
