MacBook Pro 2016 Flickering + Shadow

In all my projects, I get a shadow bug on objects in a scene (see blocks) and a weird rolling flicker across the screen.

Using UE 4.15.0 on a 2016 MacBook Pro running macOS 10.12.3. New to game development, so apologies if this is something amateur.

Hi benfsteing,

There is a known issue with Intel GPU drivers. Try turning Automatic Graphics Switching off in the following location: System Preferences>Energy Saver>Automatic Graphics Switching: make sure box is unchecked.

Let me know if this does not resolve the issue.

Thanks,

.

I don’t have this option because I have only one graphics card.

Please save a copy of your System Report and link as an attachment to your post.

Unfortunately i got the same problem here… same configuration

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016) with Intel Iris Graphics 550 (1536 MB) on macOS 10.12.4

@: Your configuration is not the same; Did you try turning Automatic Graphics Switching off in the following location: System Preferences>Energy Saver>Automatic Graphics Switching: make sure box is unchecked. ?

@gameDNA studio: The reason we are requesting your System report is to test for known compatibility issues with your specific GPU. I can look this up myself if you’ll provide the exact model number or your MacBook Pro.

@ I attached my System report. I have MacBook Pro (13 inch with Touch Bar, Late 2016), exactly the same like @. In this model we have only one graphics card so option “Automatic Graphics Switching” is not available!

Try turn off the Show->Lighting Features->Indirect Lighting Cache

@ and @gameDNAstudio, my mistake, I see both systems are the same. So, with your included specs, as well as the specs listed on the following link:

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) - Technical Specifications

Your system contains a 2.9GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5 processor.

According our Hardware & Software Specifications the Minimum processor is a 2.5Hz Quad-core processor or faster

Also when you have integrated graphics, when your GPU becomes taxed it borrows from your RAM which is already sitting at the minimum 8GB to run UE4.

That said, there are some adjustments you can make in the UE4 settings that may help with the flickering:

In Settings:

  • Set Scalability Settings to low or medium
  • Material quality level low or medium
  • Preview Rendering Level: Shader Model 4

In Viewport Setttings:

Turn off Realtime and Cinematic View.

Also try LimboSix’s suggestion below

My MacBookPro also blinks yet turn off the option doesn’t help. The blink of a surface only appears when close enough to that surface. See from a distance won’t blink. And only blinks in 4.15.1, 4.14.3 is free of the issue.

Hey , I have the same issue in 4.16.1 on MacBookPro late 2013 with Nvidia 750m
I tried all of the above suggestions - nothing helps…
Any updates on the issue?
