Shipping game not running on Radeon HD 5xxx and 6xxx

We saw this happening on a Radeon HD 5850 and a 6900. With engine 4.15 the game works fine in the editor, but shipping package crashes at startup. It worked fine with 4.14. Our game is in closed beta and the only reported crashes are with those cards

I guess this is related to the fact that these cards are pre GCN, since the log shows: AMD Pre GCN architecture detected, some driver workarounds will be in place

I attach logs of crash with the two cards

The crash can be reproduced simply from a template project:

  • Create a project from third person template
  • Create Windows 32 package
  • Run it on a Radeon 5xxx or 6xxx. It crashes at startup.

Any news about this? Will this be fixed, or support for those cards will be dropped? If the latter is the case, please let me know so I can update the requirements of the game.

Support is not dropped for those cards. We are still investigating and have been unable to reproduce this particular crash internally so it may be a while before any action can be taken.

With that in mind maybe you can put in a message warning users.

I appear to be running into the same issue. Trying to have someone load up a packaged game with a Radeon HD 8510G

The build comes from the latest GiHub engine version

Hey Guys,

Just getting back to you. We have done compat testing with various Radeon Cards and have not reproduced this crash with the latest drivers. A majority of the DxDiags provided to us also seem to have outdated drivers.

We don’t plan to compat test for outdated drivers. If we find that there are significant issues with current drivers we will continue to investigate.

Cheers,

Ed

Thank you Ed. Ill be sure he redownloads the latest drivers from Radeon and tries again.

So he has grabbed the latest drivers from the Radeon website, but we are still crashing. However this time we are unable to produce a saved log. We have run the project with -log but only seem to get a few lines in before it crashes. Are there any other ways we could try to produce a log on our end?

By “current drivers” I guess you mean the Crimson Beta drivers. I think users kept the older Catalyst because it is the latest not labelled as Beta. I told them to update to see if it the problem is solved.

Hey just following up, we haven’t locked down this issue however some other game developers have got their users to reduce crashes by lowering resolution to (1600x900) and running in windowed mode.

Question: was this fixed with 4.16?
