How do I design an open world?

Hi,

I want to develop an open world zombie game for myself as a hobby project as its something I’ve always wanted to do, but I have no idea where to start. So what Im asking is where I could begin my research into making this dream a reality?

I want it to be similar to how Bethesda made Fallout 4 in regards to loading a new level when you enter a building as this will make my job designing interiors a lot easier as I’m not a competent 3D artist, and Id imagine it would be easier on my PC.

Side note: The game will be single-player and be as low poly as I can make it with stylised textures.
Also I plan on using all blueprints if possible as I struggle with learning code.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Danny.

Hey Danny, you need to understand that if you want to make an openword game you need to spend in it alot of time indipendent if it high our low poly. And in any case you need to build your own characters, your own weapons, your own zombies etc etc becouse you cant found this material for free in internet coz is lots of lots time of work for 3d modeller.
My advice for you is to try to search to other teams that want to make a zombie indie game and help them on this chalange and in this case you can do a realy open word game like fallout 4. Fallout 4 was made by a known big studio that had thousend of membersers that developed this game.
Aniway if you want to learn how make games i suggest you to try to folow few tutorials for maya, photoshop, zbrash, substance and UE4
If you know italian I got an italian team and if you want to enter in my studio fill free to ask it. I already got 53 members.
I know other Italian team making FPS Zombie this team called Codev Studio if you know italian you can contact the founder of this indie studio:

Hi MK Studio,

Thank you for the comment. I do understand it will take a long time and a lot of hard work, but I have a lot of free time on my hands and the drive to keep going. I’m not currently interested in joining a team as I would like to design this game on my own and don’t feel I have a lot to bring to a team with my limited skills. I have already been learning Unreal Engine 4 and Blender for the past year or so and have completed a number of the tutorials series on both YouTube and the Unreal Engine 4’s own tutorials section. I have made a few game test projects and even took assets from Unity tutorials and built the Unity game in Unreal to see if I could do it. But as of now I’m just looking at honing my skills and learning the process of making an open world game.

Good luck with your Studio.

Danny
