Unreal Engine 4 won't launch after Win 10 update

Hi!

I have a problem with all of my installed Unreal Engine 4 versions (Installed through the Epic Games Launcher).
Currently i have installed these versions of the Unreal Engine 4 on my pc:
4.10.4, 4.11.2, 4.13.2, 4.14.3, 4.15.1

This problem started right after i update my Windows 10 to the newly released Creators Update, until then everything worked fine for me.
So, the problem is when i try to launch one of the versions, or opening an existing project then the engine uses around 25-30% of from my cpu uses only 10 Mb ram and has no disk load, if it would work then i had around 500-600 Mb usage and a 30-50 Mb disk load after 2-3 seconds.

It usually loads a project in under 30 secs but now if i wait 30 minutes even won’t load, also it’s doesn’t matter if i start it through the launcher or i use the .uproject file.
After the update was installed my pc had a boot loop (the loading ring was rotating endlessly) but this turned out to be caused by the video card driver so right now i’m not using the latest. (Currently using the 378.92 Nvidia driver on my Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060)

I had tried with older nvidia drivers maybe that it would fix it, or so i thought.
Also, i tried to uninstall/reinstall the Launcher and all of the Unreal Engine 4 versions but that didn’t worked, tried to verify the engines files, but the results was the same.

I have tried to run it without any antivirus, tried to lock all of my installed apps to run automatically on start up, updated every driver (except my graphics card because that’s causes me a boot loop), also made a virus scan, but nothing worked.
Even in safe mode Unreal Engine 4 won’t launch for me.

Any help is appreciated!

Hi .

We are looking into UE4 behavior on this Windows version, but please bear in mind that OS changes which affect the engine aren’t necessarily a UE4 bug. Thank you for calling attention to this though, and I hope we can find a resolution soon.

I understand that you have also written in to our customer help email, and they have asked if you are able to roll back to the previous Windows version.

Cheers

A quick follow-up that another user also experienced this issue when trying to load the Epic Games Launcher on the new Windows version. They say they were able to resolve it by doing an uninstall and re-install of the Launcher.

Epic has not confirmed this solution for the Engine.

Cheers

Another quick update. - are you specifically using the ‘Windows 10 N’ operating system?

If so, downloading this update for Windows 10 N may resolve the issue: Media Feature Pack for N edition of Windows 10 Version 1703 (April 2017) - Microsoft Support

Again, Epic has not yet confirmed this solution.

Thanks for the reply,

Just some minute ago i sent an email to the customer help that i’m unable to roll back to the previous Windows version.
I have tried the remove/reinstall the launcher, also those engine versions i use, but for me the problem still occurs.

For me the launcher works, only the engines itself won’t launch, properly they would use 500-600 MB RAM and a 30-40 MB HDD load with a 20-30% CPU load, but this isn’t the case, the CPU load is fine but the RAM is only 20-30 MB and the HDD load is 0 MB.
Thanks for the update, but unfortunately i have the Pro version of Windows 10 so it won’t let me install it.

I want to update this that we have done a full range of testing on the new Windows 10 Creators update, across all of our Epic products, and we have not encountered any issues. On all the machines we tested on, every product, including the UE4 Editor, has opened without issue.

We have also opened communications with Microsoft, but have not identified any potential culprits.

I recognize that this doesn’t help you, and I’m sorry for that, but we don’t currently have any information regarding what the issue may be that you are experiencing. We acknowledge that something seems suspicious since a few similar reports suddenly came to us for our other products like the Launcher and Paragon, however those users seem to have been able to resolve their issue. I have created a forum thread to request anyone else experiencing issues to let us know so that we can determine if there is a wider impact, but at the moment no one has responded: Potential issue loading UE4 with the new Windows 10 Creators update (build 1703) - Announcements - Unreal Engine Forums

If we have any further questions or ideas for you, we will let you know. And if you uncover anything during troubleshooting, please follow up here.

Cheers

Thanks for the help so far!

I became aware of some strange behaviour with Unreal Engine, because i was able to start one of the versions that are installed.
I’m able to start it now, but not like it should, i need to start two different Unreal Engine versions.
If i try to launch Unreal Engine one by one then it never loads anything, but if i launch first a “dummy” Unreal Engine which isn’t set to “Current” in the launcher and in the meantime i start another instance of Unreal Engine that is set to “Current” then it will load Unreal Engine as it should.

Hi ,

If you are using Comodo 10, this is likely to be the cause of your issue (as it was for me and another person as stated here). However I did not install the Creators Update, so if this is something else - although the symptoms are very similar - you can try the other solutions mentionned in the upper link: remove and install the last version of the Launcher, or install the last version of VS 2017 Community Edition.

Hi Jtro,

Thank you for this information, it was Comodo that caused me this problems.
It wasn’t sufficient to just disable and close Comodo, a uninstall was needed for Unreal Engine to work normally.

Thanks again, Jtro!

I added as allow application and the problem was solved.
