Shadows over-bright after lighting build

Hi guys,

Sorry, im brand new to UE, but im having an issue where intermittently after a light build, the shadows on a particular large object in the scene become uncharacteristically bright, to the point where they stand out from the rest of the scene.

here the character and the wire are lit correctly, but the overall larger structure is much lighter. In previous lighting builds its appeared like so:

Im really not sure what ive done to cause such a change, any help would be very much appreciated

It’s due to lightmass simulating bounced lighting. It’s how you obtain global illumination.

EDIT: also, you might be talking about auto exposure or something as well. If that’s the case, you can disable auto exposure and see if the problem still persists. You’d generally see it being a problem if your scene has really high contrast spots like looking at a very dark area and then looking at a very bright spot.

I had a go at the auto-exposure, didnt make any difference. how could i go about changing the lightmass of the larger geometry, so that it appears more in line with the wire coiled around it? theyre both the same material btw
