Creating/Importing New Characters

So I’m trying to create my own unique character for my game but I’m running into a whole of problems. I’m currently using “Autodesk Maya 2011” (Outdated I know) and version 4.11 of UE4. Now in the past I’ve tried using the “Mixamo Animation Pack” to add new characters and animations but nothing works (doesn’t have humanoid rig)…So my overall questions are these:
Can Maya be used to create characters/props? Do I need to upgrade? How come I’m unable to find the humanoid rig while trying to utilize the Mixamo pack?
I would really like some help, I’ve created a simple shooting game that I believe is pretty good but I don’t know what to do next…

Hey Rahab,

You can make characters for games in maya!! Not the typical first choice IMO however I find it more UI friendly. Also super easy to use the mixamo rig. However forget the Unreal Marketplace mixamo pack thing, it’s outdated and mixamo was bought out by Adobe and offers mixamo products and services for free (yes everything free). The only downside is no budget is in place to develop the products and services further.

Ok you wanna make a character rig it and get it in unreal:

Make the character, you do what you know to do in that department. FYI look up Adobe Fuse if your worried about outdated software

Make sure you export the character to FBX, save it somewhere convenient and then open up the Mixamo webpage https://www.mixamo.com, register for accounts with mixamo and Adobe if you havent already.

Then click on store and you should see UPLOAD in the menu bar, click that sh it. Upload you character then rig it. Just so you know all the documentation on how to do that is there.

Then within the mixamo site you can add all the animations and more, that you could get from the Marketplace mixamo pack.

Once your satisfied with everything go to MY ASSETS and look for your character. Download that sh it.

Upload that Sh it to unreal (this process lookup in the unreal engine documentation.

please let me know if this helps you at all?

Best

So good news. I used the default human character mesh from Mud-Box and sent it into Mixamo. Mixamo then rigged up my guy (I tried Maya to rig the character but the skin near his ribs kept deforming in a big way)…But anyway, Mixamo rigged up my guy. There were some problems when trying to retarget the bones, I found out two things. 1. UE4 version 4.11 does not have humanoid rig for some reason (used 4.10). 2. It seem like you need to put in a root bone after Mixamo…My character is preforming the UE4 animations but there seems to be an issue (Check Image).

The bones for his fingers flew away and it seems to be floating. When I play test it seems to be walking just fine (feet on the ground) but his fingers seem to be twisted…Is there anything I can do within UE4 to fix this or do I need to do this in Maya? PS. thanks for the pervious tips
