Why can't I package an exe with the VR template?

I am really new to Unreal and even newer to posting on forums as I have been mostly fortunate in having issues that have already been asked. But in this case, my google and youtube skills have been unsuccessful.
I am practicing on a VR project using functionality from the VR template, but the build is failing and can’t figure out why. I can package new blank project with no content successfully and get a plain black exe. But if I create a new project from the VR template and go through the same packaging process, i get BUILD FAILED. If I am reading the output log correct, it looks like the AutomationTool is failing to copy something over due to a size mismatch? I don’t know what any of that means, but when I check the files they are comparing in windows they look to be the same size and file just in two different locations.

Hello JRMcKay,

I ran a couple of tests on our end. Things appear to be working as intended. However, I believe that the issue you are having is that your “Supported Platforms” do not include the platform that you are trying to package to. If you will notice, the VR template has all but the windows platform unchecked by default (example given below). This is not that case in a clean blank project. I hope that this information helps.

Suggested solution: Try navigating to your Supported Platforms section in your project settings and turn on the platform that you are trying to package to.

For some reason mine had default of PS4 and Windows, but I had Windows and Desktop selected when I tried to package to Windows 64-bit. Just tried it again with All Platforms selected and got the same results.

Did some more exploring and found something that might be useful. CrashReportClient.exe’s that have the size mismatch do in fact copy different results to the clipboard.

I notice that you provided a callstack in your last comment. Could you install debugging symbols and they provide the complete callstack that is given? In order to install the debugging symbols you can use the “Options” selection in the drop down on the launcher.

ok, my mistake on the last bit of info. i figured out the callstack came from double clicking the UE4 Game.exe in the project folder, and that the CrashReportClient.exe in the same folder didn’t do anything.
The Debugging symbols was checked though, so not sure why the message says i dont have them.

Could you see if this issue is still occurring in the latest preview version of the engine?

4.16 preview 2… same results.

I was able to build an exe before from a blank project,but i just tried to open a new blank project in 4.15. default project name. Went straight to package project windows64 and i am getting the exact same warnings and error. After it failed i checked the supported platforms, all were checked. Seems like i’m either not doing enough or something is wrong with my system. Am i at the point of uninstalling, reinstalling and hoping for the best?

Could you check your scalability settings and let me know what they are?

everything is set to Epic.
i recently have been able to successfully build to a folder on my desktop. i have done this multiple times now with out running into this issue. this wasn’t something i was trying before. so it is only happening when i try to build to a networked drive.

I tried packaging to a networked drive on our end and was able to do so without issue. Just to be clear, when you say that you failed only when packaging to a network drive. Is this still only occurring when using the VR template or does it fail with a blank project as well?
