Debugging Failed To Merge Bones

So I’m trying to pull my character onto the default skeleton, but I get that famous “Failed to Merge Bones” error. Problem is, I actually built this rig from the proceeding one. All the joints are named the same and are in the same hierarchy as far as I can tell.

As you can see from the list, the joint names are matching (couldn’t get the whole list into view but they all matched). I can’t find a difference in hierarchy. These meshes are radically different sizes, I don’t know if that matters? Anyway, I guess what I’m asking is for better debugging tools when this comes up. The error message is vague and provides very few insights as to what is actually mismatched or wrong.
