Sun color vs atmospheric fog

I’m trying to set up a day/night cycle using a distant light and atmospheric fog. They are linked so the sky’s color adapts to the sun’s pitch changes. The sky itself looks good but the rest of the world doesn’t because the sunlight itself remains white throughout the day. I tried manually changing sun color based on incidence angle but an orange setting sun, which looks good on surfaces, turns the sky blood red.

What am I missing here? Is there a way to get the appropriate sun color from the atmospheric fog component? Can I prevent this “double coloring”?
