Editor crashes after adding/updating Reflection Capture actors

Updated with new information

I was having an issue where UE4 would crash after compiling lights. I eventually stumbled on to why by accident when I nudged a reflection capture sphere and the editor crashed instantly. I removed all of the reflection capture spheres, compiled lights, and because there were no reflections to update the light seemed to work. However, now when I try to re-propogate the scene with reflection capture actors the editor once again crashes the instant I drag/place one into the scene. The crash message isn’t helpful or give any indication of what needs to be fixed, but hopefully with this new information someone with expertise in reflection captures can give me some solutions.

Hi Nikolai Mohilchock,

Can you provide some more information on what may be happening please?

Are you able to reproduce this in a new project?
If you are able to reproduce can you provide detailed steps (see the link provided above for how to do this)?

Thank you!

Hi ,

I’m pretty sure the level is corrupted in some way that any reflection capture actor will immediately cause the editor to crash when it attempts to update captures. I can use reflection capture spheres and cubes in other projects, and even other maps in the same project as the broken level, so I don’t believe the issue is with UE4 itself. I’m just not sure how the level became corrupted in the first place.

Brief history: I had been doing iterative light builds and at one point the level had suddenly started crashing the instant lightmaps were finished baking and applied to the world. At first I thought there was an issue with Swarm or the lightmap packing process, but I realized it was an issue with reflection actors updating the scene after lights were built when I nudged a reflection capture sphere by accident and it instantly crashed the editor.

I checked to make sure I hadn’t exceeded the number of reflection actors and I only had 45 in the scene. I tried removing them one by one to see if any of them had become broken, but no matter what happened the level would crash every time reflections were updated. I eventually had to remove all reflection capture actors to build lights again, but at this point I can’t have reflection capture actors in my level at all. Dragging a reflection sphere or cube from the Place tab will cause am immediate crash.

I’m using version 4.2.1-2101290, Binary from the UE4 Launcher.

How would you like to proceed?

If it’s not able to be reproduced in a new level where I can test I’m a little stuck for my testing purposes.

Since you are experiencing a crash for this can you follow this from the “How to report a bug?” post?

If you are experiencing a crash, then
please provide us with the .LOG and
.DMP files from your
[project]\Saved\Logs folder.
Additionally, you can please send us
the CrashReportClient.log file located
in C:\Program Files\Unreal
Engine\4.0\Engine\Programs\CrashReportClient\Saved\Logs

Can you also post your DXDIAG here? You can get this by going to your command prompt > type in dxdiag > save to text file and attach here.

I can take a look at this and talk with some developers that would be able to give me a little bit more information that may help resolve this. It is possible it has become corrupt but I’m not entirely sure at this point.

Thank you!

Here is the most recent crash dump, and associated logs from my project.

I recently tried loading my sub-levels into a new persistent level to see is that might fix the issues I’m having, but with no luck. Something in one of my sublevels is breaking the editor the moment a reflection sphere/cube is introduced/updated.

Still tinkering with it, and I’m suspecting it might have something to do with lighting. I don’t have anything definitive but either the reflection capture spheres are not playing well with some of my spotlights and their non-default settings or they don’t like being in the same scene as lights with lightfunction materials. I have also found a work-around that seems to function part of the time… if I unload all of my sub-levels and set the preview renderer to Unlit, I can add reflection capture actors and move them around in the world without crashing, and then add the sub-levels back into the persistent. So long as I don’t touch the reflection captures or set the scene to Lit while I am editing the level they appear to behave. Otherwise under any other circumstance the editor crashes.

And now it gets stranger… for whatever reason (seriously, I have no idea) reflection capture spheres suddenly work and no longer crash the editor - HOWEVER - I can no longer set texture scale, angle, position, alignment, or lightmap resolution on any BSP surface. Since it’s not crashing I don’t know if there is a log or output file I can send you to prove I’m not crazy, and I’m willing to upload my entire project somewhere to do so, just tell me where.

Dropbox is a good solution for uploading and sharing a link here. If you want to keep your project private you can always PM me the link on the forums.

Without looking your project, there may be the possibility that something has become corrupted and is causing this to happen. I’ll take a look though.

Hi Nikolai,

Since I’ve not heard back from you in a few days I’m going to mark this as resolved for our tracking purposes. If you are able to reproduce the problem with steps or upload the project you spoke about with the issue please feel free to do so and send me a link.

Thank you!
