Blocky shadowing

It’s been a while smooth surfaces started shadowing blocky.
There’s a thread about it [here][1].

Repro steps:

  1. Crate a bank scene.
  2. Add a sphere
  3. Add directional light
  4. Preferably set directional light cascades to 4 (This only makes the blocky shadowing look more obvious).

This picture shows the problem.

Yeah this issue existed for quite some time. Just to clarify, it is shadowing that is blocky, not shading.

Fixed. Thanks.

Bumping it up.

also interested in seeing this resolved

It’s an issue with shadowing in UE4. Not coming from the meshes.

Still interested in an answer.

This is specifically a CSM problem.
It does not occur for lights with a Dynamic Shadow Distance of 0.0 (CSM disabled), static directional lights, or stationary preview lighting.

It does occur for dynamic and stationary directional lights that have both a positive Dynamic Shadow Distance and more than one cascade. It even seemingly occurs with one cascade, but it’s not pronounced.

It seems to occur most visibly with the furthest edge of the farthest shadow cascades. It is therefore more prominent at a close distance when there are more cascades, the Distribution Exponent is high, and/or the Dynamic Shadow Distance is close to the distance of the object in focus.

I have been having the same issue for some time now :

This really needs to be fixed one day.

Anybody?

Link a post that visually describes the issue.

I did a bit of an experiment with biasing in this thread. Generally helps to some degree, but landscapes are still a large problem.

Hey happy new year! Seems like this still the same \o/
