Adding Mesh to ART character

How would I go about adding meshes to a currently existing character in the Animation Rigging Tools? My current problem: I have to separate the characters clothing into individual parts so that I could add them to APEX cloth. However, when I separate the meshes I am not able to paint the weights. I get an error saying “Mesh has no skin cluster assigned” even though its clearly effected by the bones.

How are you separating the meshes? I often have to do similar things, and the workflow I usually use is to actually copy the source mesh several times, deleting elements from each copy (for example, my character mesh has pants, shirt, boots, arms, and head elements. I dupe out 5 copies, deleting all but one of those elements on each copy)

This way, I can use maya copy weights from the source mesh to the copy using vertex world positions!

I just use edit mesh–> Separate. If I do it your way how would i go about adding the duplicate mesh to the ART character? I cant copy weights because the dupe mesh isnt attached to a skeleton. and when i try to bind it to the bones, there is an error saying “Pelvis was bound in a different pose” even though thats not the case
