Wrong shadows on landscape

I didn’t knew this side yesterday so I wrote everything there:

I forgot to tell, I’m using 4.2.1
Any news from the defs? This issue makes the landscape noise tool very dangerous.

Hi WarMach1n3,

To fix the shadows you can change a couple of other things:

Change your directional light to be either Static or Dynamic. Static would be better performance.
If you select static you do not need to do anything. Rebuild lighting.

If you leave the lighting on Stationary, in your landscape details panel “uncheck” the “Cast Static Shadow” box.

Add a Sky Light to your scene as well to soften the harsh shadows.

The blocks you were seeing are still related to the Lightmap resolution.

There are no limits on the noise or any landscape tools. You’ll have to use your best discretion with getting the look and feel you want. The Landscape only has a specified number of components (faces) and just like any polygon the more you tweak it away from rounded or flat faces it will create the jagged edges. You’ll need smooth these out.

If you want to create some specific landscapes I would recommend looking at World Machine. There are a lot of users who have used this and imported the Heightmaps they’ve created to get some great looking landscapes!

Thank you!

Tim

Hi Tim,

is there a difference between the shadows with directional light = movable on and the preview shadow? I think the main problem of this theme are the hard edged shadows by static shadows. Is there a way with adjusting to get more soft shadows as static shadows? With the shadows like they are in the preview (when the lighting have to be rebuilt) as static shadows will do the job for me.

About World Machine, thanks for the tip, is the imported lanscape full editable with the landscape tools (like sculpt, foliage and paint)? But this hard edge static shadows I believe I would have it there too.

I made some screenshots for compare (Static light resolution on the landscape=10):

Cast shadows =off

Cast shadows = on, in Preview mode

Directional Light = stationary (static shadow)

Directional Light = movable

With World Machine you should end up with a Heightmap that you can import into the engine and create a landscape from that. Once the heightmap generated landscape is there you can edit and sculpt just as you would from a freshly created Landscape.

For softer shadows in your scene make sure to add a Sky Light from the modes panel as this will lighten up the shadows to not be so dark.

To get softer shadows without having to change anything you would want to change the directional light to Static. This will soften the edges as indicated below.

If using Stationary you’ll need to adjust some settings in the Cascaded Shadow Maps. Start with Dynamic Shadow Distance Stationary Light. Adjusting this up will allow you to access the 4 sliders below to better get the shadow edge you would like.

This is the sky light. This will help lighten your shadows.

Let me know how this works out for you!

Hi Tim,

with the Cascaded Shadow Maps it works! I get nice shadows as I wanted. Thanks!
