Landscape paint smoothing

I’m trying to get the hang of landscape materials and painting with them, but I ran into a problem with the smoothing tool. When I try to blend the layers using the smoothing tool I get all kind of weird results. I created a new level and material to experiment.

I used very sharp brushes so that the smoothing tool’s effect is more visible. I drew the same stroke 3 times, each time with a different layer selected.

Is this the normal result? Is there some way I could smoothen the painting while affecting all layers and blurring the edges only?

It doesn’t seem to be the issue of the material, beacuse the /Engine/Tutorial/Landscape/TutorialAssets/Landscape_Material template material has the same “issue”. The problem seems to be that the smoothing tool only affects one layer, and cannot be used to affect multiple. I’m looking for a way to do that, because it would significantly speed up creating transitions where 3 or more layers meet.

First i would start by watching the following video entitled “Getting Started with Landscapes”: Getting Started with Landscapes | Live Training | Unreal Engine - YouTube

It is a great introduction to the best methods of setting up landscapes and painting materials. It even has a download for a test material that I still use as a basic template for my own landscapes. As far as getting good transitions you might consider using height blending. Play around with some of the starter content materials to get a good idea of the methods of getting smooth transitions. Again, I highly recommend at least checking out the link above as it also has some great directions on using official documentation on the subject of landscape painting.
