Z-fighting / shadow acne on macbook / radeon on ue 4.16

Hello,

I just opened one of my Ue 4.14 projects with 4.16 and found the z-fighting issues you can see in the video below:

[z-fighting / shadow acne on ue 4.16 with macbook radeon - YouTube][1]

I am using UE 4.16.2 on a MacBook Pro late 2016, radeon pro 460, with OS X 10.12.6.

The issue is not happening on UE 4.15, on the same machine.

Thanks for considering the problem.

Update: whatever the problem, it does NOT manifest itself on 4.17 preview 3

Your question is related to this post: MacBook Pro 2016 Flickering + Shadow - Rendering - Epic Developer Community Forums

For information, I also have that on a MBP 2015 with AMD Radeon, running on UE 4.15. Some says it was related to this bug: Unreal Engine Issues and Bug Tracker (UE-43725) that was corrected in UE 4.16.

[EDIT]
Since the bug was reported to be fixed in UE 4.16, I switched from UE 4.15 to UE 4.16 to try… and found the same problem was still there as you said. Actually to reproduce this issue, you can create a new project, then a new material and change the floor material to this new material.

Interestingly however and as suggested in the first post that I mention, changing the Settings > Preview Rendering Level to Shader Model 4 solved the problem on UE 4.16 (it did not on UE 4.15). If still not working, the post also suggest to lower the Settings > Material Quality Level to either Medium or Low

Conclusion to solve this problem on Mac Book Pro:

  • use at least UE 4.16
  • change Settings > Preview Rendering Level to Shader Model 4 (rather than 5 by default)
  • if needed, lower the Settings > Material Quality Level to either Medium or Low
