What's a good resolution for mobile game?

What resolution should I make my game targeted toward mobile devices. I know that my widgets all scale properly but what is going to fit best with most devices?

Nowadays mobile phones, support a 4K screen resolution, but that's only for pre-rendered images not for real time rendering. In general I don't suggest you to go over HD resolution for games (since they are real time rendering), although resolution is not the only factor for performance.

So for a fairly low end game that's well optimized 720x1280 should be good correct?

Believe me, HD resolution, should be the highest resolution you should choose for a mobile game, even for a high end mobile game. To give you a better vision for that, iphone 7 has a resolution of 750 x 1334, It's not even full HD (slightly more than HD). But why? because three major factors are involved with the screen quality, which are screen size , its resolution (or PPI) and the distance from eye to the screen. iphone 7 has a PPI of 326. a modern 4k wide television with 49" size, has around 100 PPIs. So in fact human eye can't recognize the difference between an HD resolution of a 5" phone with a full HD resolution of the same size. You may ask why companies make 4k mobiles then? well its all commercial. You can't say iphone 7 has a lower quality than galaxy s 7 with 4k resolution. Besides, for most of nowadays mobiles, rendering a full HD resolution (real time rendering) is arduous. In total, don't bother your self with high resolutions for a mobile game even if it's a high end game. And if its a mid range game, I even suggest you to go below HD (because you don't need higher res).

Hope this helps.
