Can we safely work with Update Preview builds?

Are the “Update Preview” builds safe to work with? Will the official release of the builds corrupt or mess with anything we have done?

Example: My team has a project on 4.2.1 and we just tested out some of the new 4.3 features. We would very much like to switch to it now, but could that have any foreseeable negative repercussions?

You should get a prompt to Clone your project when opening the 4.2.1 version after starting 4.3
This will place the new version in a new folder and you’ll have to rename it.
If you want to you can still run the 4.2.1 version by choosing the editor type in the Launcher Library.

It wouldn’t hurt to back up your project folder externally first.

From the launcher, be cautious using Convert In Place. As I understand, it may make your project unopenable in the previous editor.

Right, but when the 4.3 Preview build goes live, will we be able to just update to the official version without issue? That’s the real question concerning “safe to use” on projects already in progress.

Hi Zortalas,

With this being a preview build there are features that are still being tweaked and there may be things that may cause issue with your current project.

We strive to make it as compatible and as smooth a process as possible, but there are things that do happen from time to time. We try and monitor these issues to keep track of what issues arise where. These are documented and reported. Since this is a preview there is a little bit of time to address some issues before the official 4.3 release goes live. You will have seen in the past we’ve addressed issues that have arisen after a official binary release that we put out a hotfix for (ie. 4.1.1, 4.21, etc).

Having the binary version of 4.3 available through the launcher now makes it much easier to find issues sooner since the users are not required to build from source code to use the preview or having to use a command line in their launcher shortcut to pull a build.

I hope this helps clarify your question. If you have any other concerns or questions feel free to ask!

Tim

Awesome! Thank you very much Mr. Hobson! So since it sounds like my team is safe to use 4.3, we will begin to do so immediately! Keep up the amazing work!

As with anything, make sure you are backing up and saving anything that works on particular build. Make sure to protect any data that way so you do not lose your work!

If you run into any issue with 4.3 please make an AnswerHub post in the “Bugs” section if it is something that was working before that is not now. This will definitely help in getting it resolved as quickly as possible!

Thank you!

Tim
