[Solved] Why does UE4 not run?

I have this problem too.
I have Windows 8.1.
I installed Unity before and it was launching but there was problems with loading assets.

Laptop Lenovo Y50 specs :

Processor : Intel Core i7-4700HQ 2.4 GHz

GPU : Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M GPU with 4GB of VRAM

RAM : 16384 MB Dual-Channel 800 MHz

Chipset : Intel HM86 (Lynx Point)

HDD 750 GB

Hey Uialeth,

could you please try creating a new user account on Windows and launch Unreal Engine from there?

I hope this will help

For some reason, whenever I hit the launch button in the launcher, it says running for a couple of seconds before reverting back to launch.

If I spam this a few times and look into my Taskmanager afterwards, i am presented with a load of stuck ‘UE4Editor.exe’.
Exactly as much as I had hit the launch button.

If i look into my Firewalls Log, it tells me that all instances have succesfully loaded a couple of image files and image dlls before stopping at whatever is blocking them.

UE4 doesn’t crash or ‘stops responding’, it just… doesn’t do anything after that. No UI getting loaded or anything.
As if it was stuck in a ‘try’ loop because of a windows component refusing to start or maybe it is waiting for something to respond that doesnt exist or can’t communicate back.

I have no idea what I’m supposed to do, can anyone help me?

  • Which OS do you have ?
  • Have you installed any other engines before ? (like Unity, did you had a problem with it too ?)
  • is your GPU Driver up
to date ? Can I have your specs ?

Windows version: 10.0 build 10586 (revision: 36; 64-bit)
CPU: AMD A10-7800 Radeon R7
OnBoard GPU
12 Cores: 4 CPU; 8 GPU
8 GB RAM

I have not installed other Engines before, but im going to check if they work:
Unity… Works
Cryengine… Works
Source SDK… Works

GPU is Driver Up to Date

Please specify what other system specs you need

To update you about my status:
I played around somemore and had to find out that SOMETIMES UE4 actually starts normal within a couple seconds, while other times i can literally wait an hour and nothing happens.

It did not help.
Running it on a new user account produces the same result.
I even tried running it on the System Account (System/NT-Authority (Higher than Admin))
Still didn’t influence the result.

Why is this happening to me =(

Edit: What i dont understand is that even tho it’s not ‘doing anything’ it still uses a lot of CPU time (a lot means ~20% which is a lot for something thats not doing anything, if i check on the programs activity recorded by my antivirus, it shows that it succesfully loads resources from its folders, but after the second resource within windows/system32, it just stops.)

whyyyyyy

Hmmm … really weird. Could you please send me your debug logs? You can get them by right-clicking on the Epic Games Launcher shortcut, selecting ‘Properties’ and, under location, adding -debuglogging behind the dash. It should look loke this: “C:\Program Files (x86)\Epic Games\Launcher\Portal\Binaries\Win64\EpicGamesLauncher.exe” -debuglogging.

Then just start Unreal Engine!

Oh, and you can get the logs (the most important part) under “C:\Users"YourUsername”\AppData\Local\EpicGamesLauncher\Saved\Logs"

I solved it. I start UE4 from the folder (not from Launcher)
it is named UE4Editor.exe

I need to do some stuff, just to let you guys know, this issue is not solved yet. Will be back in approx. two days

Hey Uialeth,

when you’re back, could you please try the debugging and send me the debug log? It should work now by starting the launcher, opening the options and check Enable Debuglogging. If a message appears, click on Restart now.

The log is still saved at the same place. Good luck doing your stuff^^
Best regards,

Pixel_Error

What log files did you want? all of them? I got 6 files in the logs folder some of them are titled self update, cef3, etc

I’m currently kinda confused, i looked into the files and found almost no trace of the editor or anything related, only a ‘Launching App […]UE4Editor.exe[…]’ line, and… thats it no logs for the editor, no comment on the state of the process, nothing.

Is the Editor supposed to spit out a seperate logfile while running with debug logging turned on?
It doesnt seem to generate one.

Don’t worry, these 6 files are normal. Please send them all to me, I’d like to compare them with mine.

Hey, I’ve deleted my logfiles, then restarted The Launcher in debug mode and tried to start UE4, to minimize the file size down to what might be important here(less stuff to dig through, still big file)

These are the two resulting log files:

cef3.log

EpicGamesLauncher.log

EDIT: Can i delete the links above and still have the files attached? they were autogenerated

I consider resetting my computer, reinstalling everything. I didn’t want to do this, but if there is no solution to this problem, i might have to do it
(RIP all settings and files)

Well, if there is no other way… I’ve checked your files, and what really makes me think is the log cef3.log, I think it’s an error caused by the launcher.

The last thing I can think of is logging out of the launcher and clicking on sign in later… You should probably contact Epic Games (support@epicgames.desk-mail.com) and send them your files.

I’m gonna try loging out, but the error is as far as i can tell NOT caused by the launcher, i already tried starting it manually from its folder, even without the Launcher running.

I also dont actually ‘reset’ my computer for now, I install windows on a new internal ssd hard drive and preserve the old one as a ‘data vault’ until this thread is closed

Small Update: logging out didn’t help

Sorry I couldn’t help you :(. It seems like Epic Games support or reset are the only possibilities…

The reason maybe very simple: the launcher can’t login your account, because of the epic server network.
I meet a lot of times, I can startup vpn then login my account or just start the editor directly, just like you did.

It did not fix my problem. VPN has no effect on this issue, but I’m glad it helps for some connection issues
