Invert lighting in material

I was wondering if there was a way to alter the light/shadow a material receives. I was looking through screenshots of “The Wolf among us” and noticed a very distinctive art feature was the fact that outlines in objects were black when the object was lit, and became brightly colored when hit by shadow.

Is there a way for materials to check how much light is hitting a certain pixel or something? Ideally I’d like to pass my material instances a black and white texture, and have the white parts of that texture be black in the light and colored/transparent in the dark.

Did you ever find a way to make this work in unreal ?? Researching this art style now !

I’m also looking for an answer to this.
