Landscape Black and Blurry?

Hi Peete, does it say “shaders compiling” at the bottom?

YAY! I think it was the light mass importance volume. It can take 5-10 mine (from my experience) to work.

Hey everybody!

I’m a completely new Unreal user- I’m following along with Lynda.com’s Unreal Engine Essential Training, and unfortunately have reached something of an impass…

I’m learning about applying Landscape materials, and for some reason when I drag the provided course material Landscape into the Landscape Material box in the details window, my landscape turns black and blurry… I’m including pictures to help illustrate what I’m seeing!

One thing I know is that the Training was made for UE 4.10, and I’m using 4.16 - I tried installing 4.17 and am getting the same issue!

The first attached picture is before I add the material, the second picture is after, with the black and blurry result.

If anyone can help, it’d be greatly appreciated! Looking forward to learning this powerful software, but this problem is leaving me completely stuck!

My specs:

MSi GT73VR 6RF Titan Pro
intel i7 2.7 GHz 4 Core
GTX 1080
64 GB Ram

Jelly! Thank you for the message! It doesn’t say anything at the bottom unfortunately. It did say in red at the top left of the screen Lighting needed to be rebuilt, so I clicked the build button… after a min or so that finished, but still black and blurry unfortunately.

double clicked the ‘terrain’ material and it seems to be okay in the material node popup window:

Try building your game by pressing the “Build” button on the top toolbar.

After pressing Build, I still get the black and blurry result- However, in the MessageLog, this dialogue comes up:

Lighting Results (1)
! No importance volume found and the scene is so large that the automatically synthesized volume will not yield good results. Please add a tightly bounding lightmass importance volume to optimize your scene’s quality and lighting build times.

Is this the problem? If so… can anyone talk me through it?

Thanks for the answer!

Hey, you can try dragging in a light mass importance volume, scale it, then see if it works!

*pls tell me if it works

Okay! Added the light mass importance volume, and scaled it in various directions! Sadly, still black and blurry :frowning:

I don’t know if this helps, but here is the Terrain folder in my content browser:

omg something happened… I don’t know what, haha… but the black and blurries is GONE.

I wish I could tell you what happened to help others in the future, but I honestly have no idea what I did. After clicking into the Terrain folder in the Textures folder, screen grabbing and pasting here, when I went back into Unreal, the landscape was there!

Maybe it took a while for the light mass importance volume to have effect? But I didn’t see any kind of loading or status bar at the bottom of the screen…

Anywho, thanks for the help everyone! Good to know that if I run into problems, the community is here to help!
