Daydream App Not Launching on Samsung S8 phone

Hi there!

I’m having issues where my app won’t start, or will crash on startup and freeze the phone, trying run a Daydream app on the Samsung S8 phone.

I’ve reproduced it using the default shooter template, building with both ver. 4.16 and 4.17 downloaded from the Epic Launcher. I enable the google Daydream plugins, set target and min android sdk version to 24, and package for android.

It’s able to run on other Daydream compatible devices, but always fails on the S8.
If anyone else has seen something similar, or if I’m doing something wrong, I’d like to know.

I am also having this issue. So far all I’ve gotten from my investigation is that the native window is never initialized. Unreal is supposed to receive an APP_CMD_INIT_WINDOW event. But for the s8, it doesn’t receive the event. I have tried running my daydream app on an s8 and another daydream enabled phone, and the other phone gets the event. The other phone is an ZTE Axon.

Hello ,

I’m currently looking into this issue. I haven’t had a daydream app fail to launch on an S8 but I am also running into other S8 specific issues that could be preventing me from reproducing the error you’re having. I’ll let you know when I have more information.

Any updates here?

Hello everyone, I apologize for the delay. We were having some unrelated issues as I mentioned but those have been cleared up. I was able to successfully launch a Daydream app to the Galaxy s8. Are you all still having this issue? If so, please provide some logs related to the crash so that we can attempt to determine the cause.

Matthew do you remember what you did in order for the s8 to succesfully launch the app?

Hello ,

The issue we were originally having was that the Daydream itself was having problems with the S8, not even related to UE4. When we went to put the phone into the Daydream headset, it would give us a message saying that the phone does not support Daydream. As I had borrowed the phone from our QA team, I gave it back to them to take a look at. From what I understand, there were no updates made to the device but it suddenly started working. When I went to test launching an actual Daydream app on the device to test what W_Dog was originally reporting, I didn’t have any issues.

Interesting. I am currently attempting to install a default vr app on my s8 and it opens to a black screen followed by a crash, I have attempted to install manually as well as using generated bat files. It does install with no issues on my lg g4. I also downloaded the oreo sdk and attempted to use that as my highest level sdk for backwards compatibility but no avail. When I install this newer package on my g4 it works once again. I’m a little perplexed into what is causing this issue on the s8 :(. Thank you for your assistance thus far matthew, are there any recommendations you could advise?

As I mentioned with my other post, it would be helpful if you could provide the logs from the session where the crash occurred. You can follow the steps here to get logs from the device.

Hey Matthew I determined the issue, apparently the s8 doesnt like being packaged for cardboard and daydream at the same time, just one or the other :S… thanks for the help

Hello ,

We haven’t heard from you in a while. Are either of you still experiencing this issue? As 's problem has been resolved, I’ll be resolving this post for tracking purposes in the meantime. If you still need assistance, please provide logs as previously requested.

I still get the crash even with only Daydream selected in 4.15-4.17
It looks like it’s fixed in 4.18 though?

4.18 has now live on the Epic Games Launcher so I would suggest giving it a try. As I still haven’t been able to reproduce the issue myself, I cannot test it so let me know of your results, please.

I guess my last comment is not so clear sorry - it is fixed in 4.18 with the new GoogleVR SDK but there is a bad performance problem in 4.18:

I don’t have access to that link. I get a 404 error “page not found” that’s the 2nd time I’ve tried to go to a github link and it didn’t work. I made an account on there, but still didn’t work. So I can’t see what that issue is.

So I also just made a copy of my project into 4.18 and:

  1. The Splash screen stopped working, even though the setup is identical to 4.17.2…

  2. The camera is SUPER jittery/sensitive, and it’s not a performance issue. Framerate looks fine, but the camera is bouncy and such. Thought I heard they did some camera changes under the hood…

Hey Eric to view that you need to link your github account in your epic games profile settings. See: Unreal Engine on GitHub - Unreal Engine

Would be great if you could also chime in so google can fix this (or at least let Epic know what needs to be fixed for 4.18.1)
