Simulate earthqauke effects on city with UE4?

Hi
i am saeed pourmehdi, MS student in urban planning from IRAN. I am working on my dissertation “modeling earthquake effects on city’s physic”. I did it in ArcGIS & CityEngine, softwares which belong to ESRI co. The model that i have designed runs good, and i can ask some queries of it like “show the area of destruction”,“show the number of peoples who are in that area”,“estimate the cost of destruction” and …
But this model does’nt show the process of destruction, it just show the result of earthquake on city and some 2d & 3d maps. now, i am looking for the way to do it in 3d environment, with power of visualize the process, the area is whole of city. can UDK help me to do that? How?

Thanx a lot

Hi saeed -

The Unreal Engine could help you demonstrate what you are asking, but there is a lot of prep work that would be need to go into the assets needed to begin. You would need to model your building structures in a modeling program like Max and Maya and working with the Nvidia PhysX Lab Destructibles tool fracture those meshes in a way that matches or at least closely approximates how your data tells you the building would fracture. You would probably want to have some particle systems generated to show debris dust as the building crumble. You would also need to program (or blueprint out) the progress of the destruction as you have laid out in your data. And more would be required depending on the realism that you wanted from the simulation.

Ultimately though Unreal cannot take raw data and generate a city and then destroy it. But to use the destruction model generated through your data and with the appropriate amount of preparation time in modeling and asset generation you could generate a very realistic model of an earthquake.

Hope that helps -

Thanks for your guide.
I need more guidance. My area is around 420km^2 and depend on magnitude and intensity of earthquake a vast part of the city may be destructed. please tell me about quality and duration of rendering. one things more is about the coordinate system. The XY of occurrence earthquake must be according with UTM coordinate system which give us the location of earthquake in X and Y. Is it possible to identifying coordinate system for the city?
Thanx again

quality and duration depends entirely and your model , ammount of details and your pc specs. As for coordinates, you should already have that data from ArcGis/Cityengine. You just make same point of origin and area.

You could also ask your promoter for advice.
