How to handle projects in UE4 to be always up-to-date?

Hi everyone,

The question I have is:

How shall I handle projects so that they are still useable for the next UE4 update.
When the 4.3 was released, my projects were greyed out or somehow transparent.
What is the best way to handle projects so they are still working with the next update.

Thanks in advance. (BTW my english is not good every time, so sorry for that  Hope everything is understandable.)

Hi Borgier,

You can still work on the grayed out projects, you will just need to open them with the version of the editor that you created them with. You can do this by going to the Library tab in the launcher and choosing the editor version.

You also have the option of converting the project to the newest version of UE4 by double clicking them and choosing Create a Copy. This is a great way because it keeps the old version of your project just in case something doesn’t convert correctly. Note that updating to a newer version may not be the best thing to do if you are in the middle of development, because it can sometimes cause issues what will need to be repaired.

I hope that helps.

Thanks, TJ

Hi TJ,

thank you for the answer. I will keep that in mind.

There’s still a little question I have for now. Do not know if someone knows an answer for that.
What do you estimate or believe would be the right future version to start with developing.

I ask this cause meanwhile I could learn more or create pieces of my project which surely will be compatible with the next version of UE4. E.g. creating nice materials…

Thanks in advance.

The Unreal Engine will continue to be improved upon and updated for years to come. Take a look at our Roadmap on Trello to see a list of features we would like to add. If you see a feature listed that would benefit a game you want to develop, you could very well wait for it to be added to the editor before starting.

With that said, I would suggest jumping in now. Version 4.3 would be a great version to start developing with. We have made a ton of additions, updates, and fixes. We also have templates that span the most popular game genres.

Thanks for that.

But I’ll have to wait for the visual editor in 4.4 cause Slate and HUD is quite difficult to use I think
