Awful Performance in Editor 4.18

Creating a fresh third person blueprint project in both 4.17 and 4.18, then using the stat fps command on the editor window, I have 120 frames per second in 4.17, but only 15 in 4.18 with frequent dips and freezes. While working in 4.18 performance will get worse and worse until the editor completely freezes.

Here is the interesting part; If I open a 4.17 project and leave it open , I can open a 4.18 project and not experience the performance issues. However, if the 4.18 project is already open, opening a 4.17 project does not have any effect.

Hello,

Could you please provide a full dxdiag of your system. The information provided from this will allow me to assist you more effectively.

Thank you.

If you are unsure how to provide a full dxdiag just follow the steps listed below.

1: search for “dxdiag” from the windows search bar.

2: Run the dxdiag application and wait for the diagnostic tool to open.

3: Once open at the bottom right of the System tab there should be a “Save All Information” button.

4: Press that button and post the contents of that here.

Here is the diagnostic.

I was able to roll back the driver and the performance issues seem to be alleviated. Thank you.

In the dxdiag I noticed that you are using the latest driver by NVIDIA, the 388.31 driver is not on the supported drivers list for the Unreal Engine. Currently the supported driver for the 900 series of NVIDIA GPUs is the 388.00 driver.

I would recommend rolling back to the 388.00 driver and see if you are still encountering the performance problems.

Where can I find the supported drivers list for the Unreal Engine? I have similar problem right now with the engine version 4.18.2

I’m running on a GTX1080 and the currently installed driver version is 388.59.

Hey Thoeme,

The current approved driver for the engine is the one stated above, the 388.00 driver. One thing I would also recommend checking if you are having performance issues is to check the Nvidia in-game overlay. If this is enabled it has been known to cause FPS issues in editor.

Hi Jeff,

thanks for your quick answer.

How do we know when it’s save to update our graphics driver? Is there a list somewhere? The information about driver compatibility in the documentation doesn’t help for a specific driver version.

Unfortunately there is no list I can post here stating the approved drivers for the engine. I apologize for this inconvenience.

Hi Jeff,

no worries about that.

I think a good place to put that information would be in the update logs of the engine. Otherwise it isn’t that big of a deal, because you guys respond quiet quickly and I’m so thankful for everything you guys did and still do.

Best,
Thomas
