How to fix Unreal Engine 4.18.1 stuck at Initializing 45%

When opening up Unreal Engine version 4.18.1 for the first time, it is stuck at Initializing… 45%. I have Windows 10 Home and have a Toshiba Satillite L775-S7248. I have tried to delete the DerivedDataCache folder from the installation folder but it is still stuck at 45%. Please Help me.

It’s not stuck, it takes a long time the 1st time round, just be patient.

Thank You for your help, this worked. Another question is will I have to wait this long every time I open Unreal?

Nah, it should only be the first time. Depends on your machine, but with an SSD it does not take longer than 30s.

How long would it take to initialize for first time use?

On a slow machine it can take even 30mins.

There’s quite a bit of shaders to re-compile. You can hit Ctrl+Shift+Esc (Task Manager) and check if the UE4 is sitting at 100% CPU - this just means it has not crashed, it’s just doing its thing.

Worry not, it’s a pretty standard behaviour.

If your laptop does not have a dedicated GPU, you might not be able to launch the editor, though. Even if it does run, expect abysmally bad performance.

Hope it helps!

My CPU usage is at 99% and just to clarify, this is also my first time opening UE4. So does it work the same way?

It has been 3 hours and it is still at 45%. What should I do? Should I just wait longer?

That sounds way too long. I had a look at the specs of the laptop you mentioned. The GPU is unsupported and it’s way below the minimum required config.

Will it work if i download a lower version?

try your firewall its most likely blocked it. the same thing happen to me and that fixed it hopefully this helps

I think it does because my CPU usage is at around 80%, and this is my first time opening Unreal Editor.

Thanks. It worked for me.

Thank You So Much

what do you mean; ‘that fixed it’? do you give permission for the site to bypass the firewall or is there another technique?

I did it on a Imac and you just go to settings - security & privacy - firewall - give permission - turn off firewall. That’s what I did on a Imac. To do it on a Windows you hold down the windows key and press x. Select system and security, then go to windows firewall, and press turn off. Also you could go on settings, and search firewall. Hope this helps.

Ghost Reborn You’re really nice!

I have just installed the new 4.20.1 version on a 2012 macbook pro.

It took 45 mins to initialize for the first time. It froze at 35% for about 35mins… Allowing Ue4 to bypass the firewall got it started again, sat at 45% for another 10mins then the rest was speedy.

The first time just takes a while.

I deleted some files that are in DefaultEngine
data\Config\DefaultEngine I deleted r.DBuffer=False In the line of [/Script/Engine.RendererSettings]
I can open it again

,Yes thats right it took 15m-20m on i7 7700k to open :). Just be patient
