ALT-MiddleClick to move tool handle stopped working

ALT-MiddleClick to move tool handle doesn’t work anymore in my 4.3 editor. It still works in 4.2, although I actually think it did work in 4.3 too but I can’t be sure now.

Possible bug or something on my side?

Hey Gigantoad -

I am not seeing a problem with the Alt-Middle Mouse pivot move. Have you changes any setting recently? Check the Editor Preferences >> Level Editor >> Viewports section to see if you have altered any mouse behavior functionality.

Let me know -

Hi Eric. I compared the settings of 4.3 to my 4.2 ones and they are the same except for “Use Power of Two Snap Size” which I’ve since enabled. Toggling that doesn’t get me the Alt-Middle Click back though.

Pretty odd, no idea what’s going on.

Hey -

Are you making sure that you are clicking on the central pivot point and not just two of the axes? I just want to check.

Eric Ketchum

Not sure I follow. I want to relocate the handle so I click outside somewhere on the object.

Say I want to scale a static mesh. I click the mesh, hit R to scale, then Alt-MiddleClick somewhere at the edge of the mesh because I want to scale from that point. The handle doesn’t move though, whereas it does in my 4.2 install.

Hey Gigantoad -

You should not have every been able to do as described. Did you install any plugins in 4.2? If possible, could you upload a video showing exactly what you can do in 4.2.

Thank You

It’s described here: Reset/edit pivot - Asset Creation - Epic Developer Community Forums

I thought that was standard functionality?

Hey Gigantoad -

You should be able to move the pivot by ALT-Middle Mouse in the perspective window by making sure that you ALT-click and hold on the center white pivot point. In the Orthogonal view you will not be able to move the pivot of the objects. You can move in perspective and then switch the orthogonal view to resize or move based on the new pivot location.

This has been consistent behavior since release. If you have been able to do something different please let us know because this was unintentional behavior.

So the answer I linked was wrong? That’s where I had the idea from and it worked so far in 4.2.

Just tried in perspective mode and it doesn’t work there either. In 4.2 it works in both orthogonal and perspective. To be honest I’d find it a bit strange for this to work in perspective view only, I cannot see much logic in that. Especially since placing the pivot in the right place is a lot harder in perspective.

Or maybe we just have a misunderstanding  I could make a video of how it works in 4.2 but honestly I don’t see the benefit. I simply switch to side view, select a static mesh, hit R, Alt+Middle Click somewhere on the mesh and the pivot/handle moves there. Exactly how I would expect it to work.

Hey Gigantoad -

Yes and No. Ryan was correct that during the Beta of the engine you used to be able to ALT MMB off of the Axis and drag in the Orthogonal windows. In the release version a decision was made to make that central pivot point be required to move the pivot which only exists in perspective. I have tried your exact steps in 4.2.1, 4.2.0 and 4.1.2 and have not been able to achieve what you are describing. When I Alt-Middle Mouse on the mesh in Orthogonal Side View , nothing happens.

I do agree that this needs to function similarly to as you are describing. I am going to enter this in as a bug, but If you can show me a video of it working in 4.2 that would be import to showing that this has indeed worked for users in the past.

Hey Gigantoad -

This has been moved to be a known bug.

Thank You for you help in tracking it down or developers are working on the issue.

Alright, thanks Eric.
