Stupid Question: What is a UV?

Hi all,

I know this probably seems like a really simple question, but it is so simple I can’t find an answer anywhere! What is a UV/ what are UV co-ords? I see them everywhere but understand nothing.

Also, just a side question, I made a static mesh in Blender and imported it into UE4. When I tried to apply a texture to it, the texture turned into a plain colour. Looking this up, I found it was something to do with UVs. Any ideas?

UV axes are used for texture mapping, they are assigning 3d polygons into 2d texture space.
You can make them by Unwrapping them.
