4.18 Skylight rarely working

I add a skylight to any scene and begin adjusting its parameters, namely intensity.

Immediately or eventually it will stop functioning and appear to be at 0 intensity despite any adjustments. Not remedied by deleting and re-adding.

Building the lighting does not fix.

I can reload the level and the skylight sometimes functions temporarily then stops again upon adjustment.

Hi hynzla,
Thank you for your report. We will begin investigating this issue as soon as possible. If we are unable to reproduce the problem, or need more information, we will follow up with some additional questions for you. Otherwise, we will post an ‘Answer’ once the issue has been logged in our bug database or we have a solution for it.

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to reproduce this issue on my end. When I open the Default Level, add a Skylight to the scene, and set an intensity of 20, it functions as expected. I’ve made adjustments to several other parameters and kept the project open for over 15 minutes, closed and then reopened it with no issues.

Can you provide a sample project that showcases the issue so we can investigate?

This was legitimately happening to me but I too cannot reproduce it now. I’ll delete this report

Hey Jon X (and Hynzia), Ive been struggling with this issue on my end aswell in UE4.18.2 (Windows 10). I’ve been able to strangely narrow down a reliable repro.

I started a blank “Third person template” in UE4.18.2 and deleted the following assets from the scene browser:

  • Light Source (Directional Light) (To make the skylight easier to see)
  • “SkySphereBlueprint” and the “Atmospheric Fog”

Simply deleting the either the SkySphereBlueprint OR the Atmospheric fog alone (in any order) doesn’t stop the skylight from disappearing, but deleting both then modifying the skylight stops it from working entirely.

As expected, adding a Atmospheric fog to my personal project fixed the issue and the skylight was displaying as normal.

This was also reproducible in UE4.17.2.

remember that sometimes you will need to manually ‘recapture’ the skylight

easy to reproduce in 4.20.3

create new project
import landscape level
assign material
add skylight
→ scene is entirely black
add directional light
→ scene is lit as expected

changing skylight intensity no difference
“recapture” does nothing
