[Feature Request] More clarity on materials

I am very new to working with materials, and am finding the current system a bit unclear. Specifically, I would appreciate:

• More clear data types
  (differentiating between scalars and
  vectors)

• Default values provided for all
  inputs

• Analogues in other systems (eg .mtl)
