Particle Visibility wat?

We have a case where the same (GPU) particle system works in PIE on windows and mac, works on android, but on iOS it works on some devices but not on others (apparently culled). Wat? The visibility is not intermittent. When it does work on a device, it always works, but when it doesn’t it never does. It has a fixed relative bounds and is spawned at the same position in world space on all devices. It’s not related to device capability unless inversely, e.g it worked on Iphone 6 and 7 and failed on IPhone 8 and X.

Any ideas or suggestions on how to debug that?
