Importing obj files

Why when I import any obj file it separates the parts into several different pieces?

I found the solution … I selected all the objects that empty part of the plane, and I dragged them to the world and they were automatically positioned and then I clicked on converting actors in a static mesh which allowed me to put any material by slot

When you export the mesh it has to be exported as a single object, so before you export make sure you merge all the peaces into 1 object, that way when its imported into UE4 it will be a single object. Dragging all the peaces into the world and converting to static mesh is a work around rather than a solution. It will be a pain if you have to do it every single time you import a new mesh.
