Why are editor sub-windows always on top, and why can't I alt-tab between them?

There’s another similar question, but in it the mentioned Jira issue seems dead, so I am creating a new question just to get a more up to date answer on that.

The current behaviour is:

  • Sub windows gets created, it becomes always on top of the editor
  • Alt-tabbing between sub windows does nothing
  • The only way to see the editor is to resize/minimise/close all sub-windows in front of it.

This is a very bad workflow. Can’t use keyboard shortcuts, and it makes me lose so much time fiddling with windows for absolutely no reason.

I need settings for:

  • Disabling always-on-top for sub-windows. I don’t even know why that’s a thing by default, but at least allow us to change it
  • Supporting alt-tabbing between said windows

Has there been any progress on that since the other question? I can’t find anything about it in the issue tracker.

i personally just dock all my windows as tabs. once you dock one it usually automatically docks the rest. that way its pretty easy to just look at the tabs on the top of the screen and select the one you want.

i also just found another question posted before that you commented on that pretty much said from staff they they looked into this an will not be implementing it.
