How to set up shutter speed in UE4

Shutter Speed isn’t really a concept that translates to a real time rendered 3d environment. As I’m sure you’re aware if you’re asking this, the idea behind shutter speed is that you control the amount of time a frame is exposed for and will lead to more/less light and also more/less motion blur.

In a game engine everything is on a fixed delta time, that being however many milliseconds there are between each frame. In the project settings you can set a fixed frame rate, to 24 or whatever you want, however if there’s any controller input from the player this will feel bad and it probably still won’t give you the results you want.

What effect are you trying to achieve by changing the shutter speed? If it is just a more film like appearance your best bet is to play with the motion blur in the rendering features of the camera itself.

If that isn’t what you want to change it for, let me know what you are trying to achieve and I’ll try and help you come up with a solution to what you are trying to achieve.

Hi,

I am currently rendering a movie to a video sequence using Cinematics in UE4. Could anyone please tell me how can I modify/set up the Shutter Speed in UE4?

Many thanks!

Hello,

Many thanks for your answer and for your great help!

Currently, I am trying to achieve that I want to use various shutter speeds (different exposure time) of the camera in UE4 to shoot different videos based on a same scene (e.g. swing leaves in the wind)----in this case, all the parameters (e.g. swing speed of leaves, frame rate, etc.) of scene are fixed except for the shutter speed of the camera. Based on that, I would think that for a same scene, I can obtain many shooting results based on different shutter speeds of the camera.

Hence, I would consider that for a typical scene, if I can set up different shutter speed of the camera in UE4 when shooting video, I can achieve above goal.

I have already noticed that the length of motion blur will be directly decided by shutter speed of the camera, and I also found that I can change the amount of the motion blur in UE4, but my current questions are that:

1. Could you please tell me what the meaning of the “Amount” of motion blur in UE4 stands for? Whether the “Amount” of the motion blur in UE4 is equivalent to the shutter speed (the bigger of “Amount” value the slower shutter speed)? Since I can arbitrarily change the value of “Amount” of motion blur in UE4 (e.g. 0.509174, etc.), but I am not sure the exact meaning of this value stands for.

2. Could you please tell me what the meaning of the “Max” distortion caused by motion blur in UE4 stands for?

3. My another idea is that I can disable the “Motion Blur” in UE4, and change the shutter speed of the camera to obtain the shooting results. I think in this case, I may obtain different motion blur since I set up different shutter speed of the camera during the video shooting process. Could you please tell me if this idea makes sense? Could you please give me some suggestions?

Looking forward to your reply.

Thanks again for your great help.
