Distance field collisions work inconsistently

I enabled distance fields, created a particle emitter which uses GPU particles with a collision node, configured distance field as the mode of collision. I placed the emitter in the first-person example map and place the standard cube underneath it.

As you can see particle collision works as expected

I placed the exact same emitter, and cube in a different level.
As you can see the collision is no longer working.

I have scoured all the forums and can’t seem to find an answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
