Mesh Distance Fields lighting object max scale

When using Mesh Distance Fields for soft shadowing, it seems there is a max scale of the object that can cast a shadow. When I continue to scale up an object, at a certain point the shadows will disappear.

It seems to be somewhere around 100,000 units. Is this documented anywhere, and is there a way to change it? There doesn’t seem to be a quality degradation as I scale up the object, it just suddenly disappears.

I don’t need mesh distance fields larger than 8 MB, this is simply the scale of the object casting the shadow. My particular case is a 10km planet casting a shadow on its rings in the distance, if anybody has other suggestions.
