How can I create a "Surface Diagnostic" Material in Unreal Engine

Hi all.

I’m trying to work out how to create a Horizontal/Vertical Surface Diagnostic material, similar to the one used in Alias.
I’ve got about 6 different ideas, none of which I think will work to the same standard, and be VR compatible. Any suggestions would be really appreciated. I’ve included a google image of the kind of thing I mean.
