Takedown notices being served on Unreal Engine created content

I was just served a takedown notice by Mega.co.nz for an fbx file that I created and uploaded and linked from this thread: ?page=3&pageSize=15&sort=oldest

The file was not linked from anywhere else and only contained FBX data that I created and an import error log.

Is it normal for Unreal Engine content linked to on this forum to become falsely targeted by copyright infringement claims? It can only be someone at Epic filing these notices. I’ll admit that I haven’t read my terms and conditions very closely - does Epic consider itself to be the owners of any content I create while being a member of the Unreal Engine community?

The notice is as follows:

We are in receipt of a takedown notice affecting the following public link in your account:

Hello ,

Thank you for letting us know about this. I spoke with our legal team and we are a bit baffled. To our knowledge, no one from Epic has made an official request for any content to be taken down recently. We suspect that it may be either an error or perhaps the FBX/3D modeling program’s creators.

Have you attempted to contact Mega.co.nz as the email suggests? If an Epic employee did make that request unbeknownst to legal, please let me know so we can contact Mega and get this fixed immediately.

Thank you,

This happened to me after posting a link to UE forums a few months ago. The takedown notices kept coming long after the content was removed and mega locked me out of my account and 200 gigs of photos and project files. All for one takedown on a file that should not have been flagged in the first place. Just a friendly warning to back up your data from mega. They won’t answer your emails either, sent them about 20 when the kept sending the same takedown notice email.

It’s possible that it’s just an automated script filing incorrect notices. In which case I’d recommend Epic investigate who is scraping their forums and issuing takedowns. It’s obviously very bad PR for you.

I’ve already asked Mega to reinstate the file and requested an explanation. I’ll post back here again if they respond.

That’s sub-par and really not acceptable. It sucks enormously that you lost other files too.

I’ll probably host off of my own servers, thanks!

I see from 's post that this most likely has to do with Mega’s automated script. I still find this unacceptable, as many of our users host content there. I will see what can be done about it, but for now I would like to suggest you look into other hosting options. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Thanks , you guys are great!
