Can a Static mesh with a Masked Opacity material self shadow?

I have a static mesh with a Surface Masked material (2 sided foliage) which is composed of many umbrella shaped shells. It represents the leaves of a tree. As you might expect, the texture has many leaves and branches of a tree.
When I look at the light baked asset under “Lighting Only” mode I see that none of the negative space in the texture (transparent areas) allow light to pass through into the center of the tree.

Is this possible? Or do I have to switch to Surface Translucency?

thanks!

UE4.19, static spotlight, static mesh, masked surface material. Seems good after light building.

Maybe you can check your UVs and lightmap resolutions.
