Do i need to install unreal engine for fortnite?

i installed fortnite on my pc and it runs ok, not the best performance so i noticed on the epic launcher there is an unreal engine tab with the option to intall unreal engine 4.19.2 it is over 6gb… im asking if installng this would make the game better?

and if fortnite runs on URE how comes it wasn’t installed when i installed the game? and what engine is running fortnite on my pc now, as i said it runs ok (laggy but that could be network issues) i only ask as 6gb is quite a lot for my 128gb ssd drive, i could install it on my sshd drive but that would impact perfermance greatly i would imaging

No, UE4 in launcher is only for game development (and technically other things involving visual content creation), all UE4 games are fully functional standalone not having UE4 editor install don’t effect them at all.

You only need UE4 if you want to open unreal projects that you may find elsewhere (like in GitHub), everything else runs without need of having editor.
