Redoing Character Skeleton and reimport without reskining?

I have 9 characters. I’m using skeleton retargeting to make all 9 characters use a single skeleton. Inside of my 3D software Maya, they all have the same skeleton skin bind to them with the same name and bones. I have been using Maya LT 2018 auto-rig feature. I’m not liking the rig anymore and it’s not allowing me to make the animation I want to make easily. Can I just make a new skeleton from scratch using the same names and bones hierarchy in Maya and then reimport back to UE4 without having to rebind all my characters in Maya? or will the control rigs and everything else start to cause problems?
