it really depends on the quality you want / can accept and your current situation. if your a professional studio the answer will likely be different than if your a solo Dev just starting out. if your looking for something free then theres audacity which many people use. personally if i were going to record a sound like a gun shot as your looking to do then i would be using a portable device made for the purpose like a H4N. of course that just my opinion / preference. if you want to see a video that features the device ill add a link to a peter mckinnon video where he uses one near the end.
