Accesible product for AR face tracking

Hello,
I apologize if this question may come off as rather cumbersome, but I am a long time android user and feel a bit desoriented with apple products.

I have seen a lot of people use an iPhone 10 to demonstrate the capabilities of AR Kit and facial tracking and I got very interested in it…
I am considering buying a device for this purpose, but I find the idea of buying an expensive iPhone 10 for this purpose only quite silly. What is the most cheapest, accessible, iOS device that does the same job quite well? I am not sure whether the facial tracking requires some special camera sensors specific to the recent and expensive devices like iPhone 10, or something cheaper would do the same job just fine?
Thanks for reading.

You’ll need a device with a front-facing TrueDepth camera - which is only available on the latest devices. Here’s the latest list of compatible devices that I’ve seen: iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPad Pro (11-inch) or iPad Pro (12.9-inch, 3rd generation). I pulled this list from the below article. Unfortunately, the iOS Device Compatibility Reference that I used to point to is no longer being maintained.

Perhaps you can find a used, or low-spec device for experimentation - still pretty expensive though. Or, it looks like it’s possible to rent a phone.

Good luck!

What Apple device did you end up using? if you did go down this route that is. I’m in a similar situation, and unsure if XS/XR/IPad are supported.

Thanks,
