Reimporting static mesh adds new material element

I have a static mesh in UE with 1 material slot. I have an altered version of the static mesh in Blender also with 1 material slot. When i try to reimport it, is asks what file to reimport (The original import file no longer exist).

Then it opens the “Material Conflict Resolution”-screen. No matter what i do, i end up getting a mesh with at least 2 material elements. One which covers the entire mesh, and one that is not used for anything. If i import the mesh as a new file, it has 1 material element.

Why does it insist on keeping the original material slot when reimporting this way?
Is it a bug, or something i do wrong?

In the mesh editor within UE, do you have a little “X” button on the useless material ID? I’ve had this happen too but the extra material has always been removable via that button.
