Using Unreal Engine as a debugging tool

We would like to use an easy-to-use program to help the development of our products, as a data visualizer.
The “application” / debugging tool developed with Unreal Engine would never be visible by our client and never sold, only used within the enterprise.

Is it legally feasible to use Unreal Engine for this purpose ? Would it be free of charge (either license or royalty fee), as it would never generate any revenue by itself ?

What license would be required ? “standard” Unreal Engine (EULA - Unreal Engine) or the “Studio” one (Datasmith - Unreal Engine) ?

Secondary question:

As a non-gaming enterprise, should we use the “Unreal Engine Studio” license (cost of 49$/month) if we want to really release a Product developed with Unreal Engine, and if we do so, would this Product be royalty free ?

Hi there! You may freely (i.e., without owing royalty) distribute products made using the Engine if the product does not contain any engine code or rely on the engine to run. This can be done under either the standard or studio EULA. The Studio EULA provides access to additional tools that may be helpful.

This depends on your distribution plans. The Studio EULA does not provide for general distribution of Products to individual end users. So, if by “release” you mean release to the general public, this can only be done under the “standard” EULA, under which you would owe royalty subject to the terms (and exceptions) of Section 5.

Clarification on the last point: if you plan on distributing the Product for free (including to end users), that is permitted under the Studio EULA, and you would not owe any royalty. To the extent you will be charging for the Product, the above point applies. Hope that makes sense!

It is nice to know we can use Unreal Engine this way.

As for a “released Product”, I think it would never be for individual end users / general public, but for other companies as we our more into B2B than B2C.
