Question and Response From Mixamo on Possible Vehicle and Aircraft Rigging Tool

I’ve been familiar with companies like Mixamo awhile now, and so after seeing the 15 free characters from Mixamo in the Marketplace did more research again on the character creation and rigging as had some time to do so.

After thinking about it a bit, I thought well other objects are animated and could possibly benefit from a similar setup as the characters for animations besides the characters because we have things like vehicles and aircraft that also need rigged for common animation tasks, though I could do much in UE4 now, it would be a time saver to have such a tool and probably be simpler to implement than they did with the character rigging tools. but similar to how the characters are setup, so I had the idea to ask Mixamo a question, and below was how it went, I’m putting this out incase anyone else was wondering the same, the below was answers I received.

My Question:
[FEATURE REQUEST] Vehicle and Aircraft Auto-Rigging:

Kurt, Aug 13 08:19 PM:
Are their any plans to implement simple rigging for vehicles, and/or aircraft, or other objects which commonly feature basic configurations and motions?

For instance, vehicles commonly have bones which represent points of tire rotation, you may also include them for thing such as doors, hood, trunk, etc…

Helicopters have rotors that commonly rotate along specific axis 360 degrees but also have sliding or rotating doors, etc…

Planes have jet thrust vectoring nozzles commonly cockpit door.

It might be something useful to add some algorithms for that so vehicle and aircraft assets may be created quicker with auto-rigging.

You’d place the joint locations for tires for however many tires their are, or the rotator or door points, set to sliding or rotating door types, perform the algorithm checks and walla instant vehicle or aircraft rig.

My First Response:

Hi Kurt,

We mainly focus on characters specifically bi-ped characters. We are working on implementing quadraped rigging, but are still testing it. We do not have any future plans on vehicle or aircraft rigging.

Second Response:

Kurt,

I think that would be very awesome but it’s not really something we’re focusing on at the moment.
I’ll definitely note it down though because we always keep track of what our users are looking for and try to meet those needs!

Thanks for taking the time to give us some feedback.
