UE4 huge logfiles & crash after using Houdini Engine

I’m using Houdini Engine 17.0.425.

I don’t know whether this is an UE4 problem, a Houdini Engine bug or an user caused issue. Attached you will find an excerpt of a 1.5 GB big UE4 logfile. This is what happened:

  1. I am importing versions of the same asset with ascending version numbers, getting rid of the old ones in the end.
  2. At some point UE4 started crashing on hdas that weren’t causing any problems before. Several maps with assets in them got corrupted: UE4 would freeze and crash without a report when trying to click on or delete or open the corrupted map.
  3. I deleted the corrupted maps from the Windows Explorer. During the process I also got rid of a lot of old hdas that were referenced in those maps.
  4. After restarting the PC and UE4 the project wouldn’t open anymore. What was happening was that UE4 would write huge logfiles (some up to 50 GB big) at start up. When having a look into these files I found excerpts like the one attached over and over.

From my interpretation this is what happened: the Houdini Engine tried to locate files that were already deleted (from disk). Even though the references to these files and the maps were also deleted. This caused an infinite loop that just a P4 clean could resolve. However I have no idea what caused the corrupted maps and why assets that were always working well suddenly caused UE4 crashes.

Once during working with an asset and a second time after I managed to open UE4 after some attempts it was no longer finding a Houdini installation. It just stopped detecting the installation.

Please have a look at the log file. We would really like to know what’s going on there. How can we prevent this from happening?

Cheers!
