Substance plugin installation/compatibility osx

Hello, I’m trying to work with Substance materials, but am having an installation or compatibility issue.

The Epic Games Launcher claims the Substance plugin is installed, but it does not show up in the Unreal Editor.

I’m new to Unreal and the on-boarding process guided me to install the 4.21.1 Beta. I downloaded an older version of Unreal Engine (v4.20.3) to see if there was a compatibility issue; but the v4.20.3 engine won’t even launch; initializing stalls at 35% complete.

Is there an Unreal engine + Substance version combination I should try? An installation error I can debug? Any other suggestions?

TIA

OK

  1. is it installed to the correct version?
  2. have you gone into the plugin manager and enabled it?

Lets start here.

Well the only thing I could tell you now is to check your disk permissions, this has help with other problems on mac, but I don’t know what else to say.

Hi, thanks for the reply!

According to Plugins in Unreal Engine | Unreal Engine 5.2 Documentation
my project should have a Plugins subdir; but it does not.

The Epic Game Launcher->Engine Versions->4.21.1 Engine->Installed Plugins lists Substance as being installed.

In my project, the Unreal Editor->Edit->Plugins lists Substance as installed and the enabled checkbox is ENABLED.

I’ve restarted Unreal Editor and Epic Games Launcher. I still do not have Substance materials.

I have had this same issue and went back and forth with Epic troubleshooters. Apparently it starts at Mac OS 10.13.5 or higher. I have a Macbook pro running 10.14.2 Mojave and had to go to the engine version tab and select “Verify” and it initialized, then eventually verified Unreal and now works. So if your Graphics card doesn’t have an issue with a higher OS version, that may be your easiest fix. Good Luck.
