[BUG] Sculpting landscapes is not consistent based on the direction of the landscape

Sculpting a precise (sharp) landscape using the flatten tool, creates sharp jagged edges on diagonals going in the + x & - y directions.

However diagonals going + x & + y result in a nice straight diagonal line.

Is anyone aware of anyways to fix this or work around this to obtain nice straight lines in all directions?

The problem you are seeing is caused by the way polygons are generated for the landscape. The effect you are trying to achieve is at least very hard to make, since the landscape tool is not meant for making hard edges at all (all the contrary, its meant for organic land sculpting).

You can try increasing the resolution of your landscape (a lot) and then scaling it down to have a bigger density of polygons.

But what I would advise you is to simply model your scenery either in an external program that allows you to sculpt hard edges, or using BSPs or meshes to cover up the parts of your terrain that you want to have hard edges (this last one is the general aproach level designers have when making cliffs).

The other problem you will face with this aproach is that textures will be stretched on the sides of your hard edges unless all your terrain shaders are triplanar, which would be pretty costly.

Hope this helps. Have a nice day!

Thanks for the reply, I was already planning on covering up the stretched cliffs with a mesh I made in blender. Do you know of any free programs that I could use to sculpt the landscape with hard edges like I want?
